Meghan Markle attends first official event with the Queen

On Monday, Meghan Markle joined Queen Elizabeth for her first official event with the Queen.

Markle attended the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey, which celebrates the Queen’s commitment to her commonwealth, with her fiance, Prince Harry, according to CNN. The annual service is also notable as the largest inter-faith gathering in the United Kingdom.

Also in attendance were Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, and Markle’s future father in-law, Prince Charles.

This isn’t the first time that Markle has spent time with the queen, since she attended the Christmas Day festivities with the royal family in December. She was the first to do so who wasn’t already married into the family.

A tribute to Princess Diana

While she was there, Markle caught attention for her fashion choices, which paid tribute to Princess Diana. Princess Diana, who was Harry and William’s mother, would often wear berets and especially loved milliner Stephen Jones. So, during her appearance, Markle paid tribute to her with a chic white beret designed by Jones himself.

Time noted that she also wore a pair of navy pumps that many speculated were a further tribute to Princess Diana.
