An Illinois police officer who stood by and did nothing while watching a helpless woman get verbally attacked over wearing a shirt with a Puerto Rican flag, has stepped down from his job after the shocking incident was caught on video.

Officer Patrick Connor, a 10-year veteran, was scheduled to explain to his superiors today why he did nothing as a woman was berated by a belligerent man who was allegedly drunk, and cursed the woman for wearing the shirt, reports the Chicago Sun-Times.

Instead of facing more heavy criticism and possible disciplinary action, Connor apparently chose to quit his job late Wednesday over the encounter that quickly went viral on social media.

Cook County Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia called Connor’s resignation “a commonsense decision after his inaction and failure to serve Cook County.”

“However, this still leaves many questions unanswered,” Garcia said in a statement.

“Cook County Government must not only review the types of trainings that officers and staff in all departments receive, but how they are implemented and held accountable.”

Forest preserve officials said they “are further addressing aspects of this incident” and more details are forthcoming.

Tamara Cummings, general counsel for the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police Labor Council said about the deplorable incident: “The video does not look good, but anybody who is a football fan knows that the video does not tell the whole story.

She urged viewers to be slow to judge.

“We still don’t know what happened outside the video. We don’t know what was going on inside his head.”

Still the 36-minute video of the confrontation posted by Mia Irizarry, the woman targeted in the vide left many people upset. They condemned Connor’s inaction to serve and especially protect the woman.

Timothy Trybus, 62-year-old visciously berated the woman and Connor stood by as Irizarry asked for help.

Trybus was later charged with assault and disorderly conduct.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, police may add “hate crime” to those charges.
